Why "Backing" is important to fire safety codes.
Modern fire codes, building codes, insurance regulations and various state and federal safety codes require certain drywall constructed walls and ceilings to maintain stability for a minimum of one hour in event of a fire. Any drywall repair performed without using backing will not pass any inspection of these codes and regulations for commercial applications and most residential fire rated applications. Backing is important because it adds the strength necessary to the repair to be able to resist the pressure from a fire hose should the stream be directed at the repair. Building & fire codes state that the repaired area must be able to handle a direct stream from a fire hose for a minimum of 60 seconds without losing it's structural integrity

When installed as directed, the applied joint compound forms a bond between the original drywall and the plug. The aggregate applied to the plug itself gives the joint compound hundreds of points to hold to thus insuring an extremely strong repair to the core drywall. The facing is designed to eliminate the need for taping the drywall repair. The material used for facing is not only strong enough to stand up to any amount of wiping or over sanding, it's less than 1/30th of an inch thick so the facing material can easily conform to the original damaged wall or ceiling giving a great finish or texturable surface.
